Private Sector / Foundations Team to Employ Foster Youth

Youth who grow up in the foster care system face tremendous challenges as they transition to adulthood.  They have all of the same challenges other youth face, plus the additional burdens that are unique to them:  Suffering the trauma of being separated from family and the expectation of complete independence at the age of 18 or 20.

Our publicly funded foster care system is strained to support these youth and rightly focuses on housing, safety, medical care and education.  There are very few public dollars focused on preparing foster youth for the workforce.  Yet, who needs to be prepared more than this group of emancipating minors who lack a family support system?

TeenForce, a non-profit social enterprise, is addressing this challenge by marshaling the resources of the private sector and other non-profits to generate age and skill appropriate jobs for current and former foster youth ages 15 – 24.   As a founding member of the Foster Youth Employment Coalition, TeenForce helped launch a partnership with the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce with a goal of generating 100 jobs for foster youth in 2013.

After filling 60 of the jobs during the first five months of the year, the drive to 100 took a big leap forward last week with a Hiring Fair at the Chamber office.  Seven youth were offered jobs on the spot and another 25 were invited back for second interviews, which will include typical hiring steps such as background checks and drug screening.

These opportunities were provided by a wide range of employers including Orchard Supply Hardware, M. E. Fox & Co., Planet Orange, El Camino Hospital, Home Depot, Goodwill of Silicon Valley, RFI Security and Princeton Capital. 

The event was highlighted by two youth speakers.  Mauro is a state licensed termite inspector working full-time with Planet Orange.  Not bad for 18 and a half years old!  And, Antaeus, who works at Princeton Capital gave a stirring speech citing the hope and opportunity that was palpable in the room.

The Intero Foundation was pleased to present TeenForce with a $7,500 check to support their expansion into Morgan Hill and Gilroy.  The South County is home to a number of disadvantaged youth and the TeenForce services will be well received.

We are still getting some awesome comments about the Hot Wheels for Kids Car Show that took place on May 4^th…. A New Record for Hot Wheels for Kids

The word on the streets is… Hot Wheels for Kids is one of the coolest car shows around.  This past Saturday May 4^th, Intero Saratoga hosted the 3^rd Annual Hot Wheels for Kids Car Show Benefitting the Intero Foundation, and for the third year in a row, we had over 70 beautiful cars from classics to customs, muscle cars to hot rods, lined up around the parking lot…perfectly polished and glistening in the sun.  In the end, we raised approximately $7,000 for the kids! This is THE feel-good event of the year when it comes to fundraisers….everyone you look at is all smiles.  The pride of ownership that the car guys have just radiates through the crowd.  The music provided by Gabe & Connie Gabrielson, along with baby son William, and the BBQ aroma courtesy of Tim McDonnell  of the Ultimate BBQ, added to the party atmosphere.  We also had a special guest - our friend and colleague Dwight Clark, who stopped by to check out the cars, chat and take pictures, and autograph a football, complete with a drawing of “The Catch” play.  That football, one of the hottest prizes up for raffle, was won by Chevelle Club member  Michael Crusco.  The other big raffle winner of the day, taking home the iPad Mini, was a very excited Lia Alon, who along with her big sister Dana, came out to do face painting for the kids.

Trophies went to some of the most outstanding cars, including First Place Pre-1975 to John Cross with his powerful  1970 ‘Cuda, First Place Post -1975 to Bryan Rose with his pristine 2011 Challenger Hemi, “South of the Border” award to the super cool 1956 Chevy Delivery owned by Ronnie Ogas, and People’s Choice to Manny Sereno’s 1930 Ford Model A.

I Can Already Hear the Engines....

We are just days away from one of my favorite Intero Foundation events of the year.... The Hot Wheels for Kids Car Show.  It is happening this Saturday, May 4th at the Intero Saratoga office, at the corner of Cox and Saratoga Avenues. It makes me smile just thinking about it.  Beautiful cars from across many eras, sunshine, music, family and friends, all coming together to support an incredible cause.  It takes months of planning and promoting, but two years after it all started with a dream to host a different kind of fundraiser, we like to think we are getting the hang of this car show stuff.  We are expecting the biggest turnout yet for the upcoming Third Annual show.  We even got some local press coverage courtesy of the Saratoga News....check it out!  http://www.mercurynews.com/saratoga/ci_23134772/some-hot-wheels-will-raise-money-kids

A Third Successful Mobile Sea Food Adventure

What do you get when you mix a beautiful spring day, table and chairs and bring one amazing food truck to Intero Saratoga all in the name of raising funds for the Intero Foundation?  A Third Successful Mobile Sea Food Adventure!

Let's take a step back and start at the beginning.  It all started a year ago in an attempt to find a creative way to raise awareness of the incredible work of the Intero Foundation and its efforts to bring the community together and help needy children.  I thought that it would be fun to have Sam's Chowder Mobile and their scrumptious food and invite the community to come and have lunch in the name of the Foundation; then I would donate an amount to the Foundation equal to the food sales brought in that day.  It would have been easy to just write a check, but what I have found is that people love to participate in charitable causes and if they get a little something in return.  And I thought I could make it happen.

So flash forward to April 24th 2013...a brilliantly beautiful spring day...with a banner on the corner advertising the festivities...Canopies, table and chairs in place...Sam's Chowder Mobile rolled into the parking lot of Intero Saratoga and set up shop.  Within 20 minutes there was already a line.  Intero agents, their families and friends, members of the community and the diehard Chowder Mobile followers stood in line and ordered up, sat down and ate or took it to go.  At the end of the 3 1/2 hours...150 meals and $3,500 worth of food and beverages were purchased.

It does not get any better than this, I thought…how could you consider this anything less than a success?  The Intero Foundation does such amazing things for children in our community. You never know how much it means when people come together to benefit those in need.  Children are the future...we owe them a chance.  And that, I believe, is at the heart of the Intero Foundation.

Don't worry...if you missed out on the chance to enjoy or want to come back again, Sam's Chowder Mobile's yummy food will be back in the Fall of 2013!

Kids Helping Kids

My daughter Natalie, who turns 6 at the end of the month, was hanging out in the office for a few days over spring break.  Always one to keep busy, she began selling paper hearts that she had cut out of copy paper.  She went around to the agents with some serious sales skills.  By the end of her rounds, she had made about 3 bucks.  She wasn’t quite sure what she should do with the money.  She wanted to give it to someone, but who?  This is a girl with a charitable spirit who gives any extra dollars she has in her backpack to her school friends on Ice Cream Friday.  I suggested she donate it to the Intero Foundation, explaining to her that some children aren’t as lucky as she is, to have what she has….lots of toys, clothes, shoes, a safe home, a healthy body….and that giving the money to the Intero Foundation would be a great way to help other kids. She agreed, and happily stuffed the money in an Intero envelope and addressed it accordingly. Kids helping kids….what could be sweeter!

The Intero Foundation Donates over $200,000 in 2012 to Organizations that Support Children in Need

Intero Real Estate Services Agents and Employees Contribute Back to Communities

Cupertino, California – The Intero Foundation (www.interofoundation.org), a non-profit organization, created by the founders of Intero Real Estate Services in 2002 to benefit children in need, announced that it has donated over $200,000 to 25 charities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012 as part of its mission to positively impact the growth and well being of children in our communities.

John Thompson, Intero’s Executive Vice President explains, “Agents donate a portion of their earnings from every home that is sold. As a company, this commitment makes a big statement. Therefore, when you drive by an Intero for sale sign or work with an Intero Realtor, feel good that at risk children in the community will be served and we thank each and every one of you for your support.”

In addition to the agents’ contributions, in 2012, Intero hosts a variety of fundraising events including their second annual Intero Day at the Giants.  This past year’s event raised over $14,000 making this the biggest single fundraising event in the Foundation’s history.

Another event, Hot Wheels for Kids, a car show benefiting the foundation that takes place at the company’s Saratoga office, brought in $4,000.  All of the money donated at these events goes directly to children in need through organizations in the Bay Area.

One Warm Coat Drive 2012 Success!

During the month of December, agents and employees from Intero Real Estate Services worked together to gather coats for the organization One Warm Coat.  We are overjoyed to announce our final donation numbers!

Christmas Poem

On Christmas morning you open your eyes, and awake to such a joyous surprise.

Children filled with wonder, laughter and love,

at the gifts that Santa has brought from above.

But just down the block at another little house,

the children awake quiet as a mouse.

Their eyes fill with tears at the sight of their tree,

small and forlorn with nothing underneath.

Their cupboards are empty and their table is bare,

For them there will be no Christmas fare.

No gifts to make their little eyes shine.

No feast to last from morning to night.

Their mother really did try her best,

but after paying their bills there was nothing left.

Her children wonder what did they do wrong.

All year long they had tried their best,

hoping Santa would remember them like all the rest.

But, this year Santa didn't come,

and heartbreak and tears filled their little home.

Their mother's heart was broken at the sight,

how could she explain to the children their plight.

She gathered them round and gave them a hug,

for she had nothing to give them, except for her Love.

They had been good and done their best,

so she tried to put their minds to rest.

It was nothing they did or didn't do,

there just wasn't enough money to see them through.

She explained to them that all those gifts were not free,

and why there was nothing under their tree.

She spoke of bills and money and love,

and how Santa can't come to everyone.

The only thing the children knew,

was that the stories of Santa really weren't true.

She put them to bed, and kissed them goodnight.

There is no Merry Christmas when your life is a fight.

The Intero Foundation: Why does it matter?

*Because the children in our communities belong to ALL of us. The Intero Foundation is a funnel for funds to flow to the kids who are in real trouble and are suffering. We have created a culture of CARE for others, and of loving support for the children who need us most--those who don't live with us but have few or no other resources for help.  That matters! *Because The Intero Foundation recently gave a grant to At The Crossroads, an organization for kids, mostly teenagers, who are living on the streets and have no money, no families to help, no access to bathrooms or hygiene items, and no clean clothing to wear. Volunteers and therapists visit them in their environments under bridges and in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco four nights a week from 2:00am to 6:00am, giving them food, socks and underwear, hygiene items. More importantly, these counselors  sit with the homeless children to listen to their stories and offer them hope. That matters!

*Because the Intero Foundaiton funded a grant to KARA, an organization that provides counseling support to children who are experiencing substance abuse, rape, depression, PTSD and childhood neglect. Many of the counselors volunteer their time and no child is turned away. That matters!

*Because we have so much to be thankful for and some of our greatest blessings are our children. That matters!

Intero Foundation hits a Home Run by donating to At the Crossroads and Kara!

There is a sea of Orange and Black on the streets of San Francisco. The San Francisco Giants have just won the World Series in Detroit!  Adults, youth and teens alike are celebrating their home team; then travel on to their own home for a warm meal, hot shower and warm bed.  Not so just a few miles away from AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants! We have a crisis of youth and teens living on the streets…homeless. Homeless because of physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, prescription drug dependency and poverty. These adolescents are at the cross roads of their lives. Devoted volunteers, counselors and psychologists of At the Crossroads, based in San Francisco, offer guidance and support. The mission of At the Crossroads is to reach out to homeless youth at their point of need, and to work with them in building healthy and fulfilling lives. Their innovative model focuses on young people who do not access traditional services and are disconnected from any type of consistent support. They are succeeding in their goal of helping their clients to build outstanding lives, not just lives of subsistence.

The Intero Foundation is proud to share that they have continued their support by funding a $10,000 grant to the At the Crossroads Organization, making their total donation of $20,000 for 2011 and 2012.  Please become informed and visit their site at www.atthecrossroads.org

While local fans celebrate having their home team in the World Series, a different type of celebration has been happening down the Peninsula.  A young adolescent has suddenly passed away.  Her family, young siblings and friends at school are at an utter loss as to how to cope with their staggering grief.  The Kara-Grief Support Group, based in Palo Alto provides compassionate support to youth on their journey through grief so that they can move toward renewed hope and to continue in celebrating the life of the deceased. Their clients include those who are grieving a death as well as those coping with terminal illness, their own or of a family member.

The Intero Foundation is proud to share that they have just donated a $7,500 grant to help support Kara’s professional guidance and council.  This is our first year donating to Kara. We were honored and humbled by their request. Please visit their site at www.Kara-Grief.org.

Meanwhile, a third Celebration is taking place at a local Intero Real Estate Office.  The World Series is happening as well as being televised on T.V., but the Intero Agent has stayed late at the office to help his clients.  He just closed an escrow for a young couple that purchased their first home! One of many reasons he came to Intero is because of the core values of Intero and their dedication to helping local children at risk.  Intero Agents have the opportunity to donate a part of their commission to the Foundation, thus allowing funds to be donated to such great organizations as At the Crossroads and Kara.  Looking at his smart phone…he sees that when Pablo Sandoval stepped up to the plate and hit 3 home runs in one game…earned him MVP of the Series! Wow!  Sensing that this evening is a day in history, he decides that now it is his turn to step up to the plate and hit a home run by increasing his donations to the Intero Foundation!

Being at Intero is like playing on a World Series Team!   Every donation, no matter what size, makes a huge impact.  But, by increasing your donations, we can all be team player’s; MVP’s and maybe even a Pablo Sandoval!!

With Clam Chowder and Madonna, Intero Agents Get Creative Giving Back

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA (October 22, 2012) – A random act of kindness, paying it forward, giving, this is how to best describe the actions of two very generous Intero Real Estate Services Realtors® who recently made large donations to the Intero Foundation in very unconventional ways - Julie Wyss with Madonna tickets, and Kim Connor with Sam’s ChowderMobile.

The Intero Foundation is a non–profit organization founded by the leadership and agents of Intero Real Estate Services, Inc. in 2002. The foundation has raised more than $2 million to benefit children living in the local communities. Most often Intero agents choose to give on a monthly basis or during each real estate transaction, but within the same week Intero had two benevolent agents who thought outside the box and got creative.

Wednesday October 3rd, Intero agents and guests from all over the south bay came together to enjoy Sam’s ChowderMobile Intero’s Saratoga office on Saratoga Avenue.  This event was organized by Kim Connor, a Realtor® in that office.  The result of this event was a generous donation to the Intero Foundation from Kim Connor who matched the sales of the event.  Kim ended up making a personal donation of $3,200 to the foundation.

Also last week, Julie Wyss a Broker Associate at the Intero Los Gatos office, auctioned off two tickets to the sold out Madonna MDNA Tour who was performing this past Saturday October 6^th, at the HP Pavilion in downtown San Jose.  The highest bidder, Candace Levers, a Realtor® from Intero’s Los Gatos office, wrote the check for $760 directly to the Intero Foundation.

Supporting non-profits in San Benito County

The Intero Foundation with combined efforts of the local Hollister Intero Real Estate Services office recently announced that they are granting local non-profits Small Steps and HOPE Services a combined $17,500 towards programs that benefit underprivileged children right in San Benito County. The board members of Small Steps are fortunate to receive the grant this year to continue efforts and expand resources, in supporting annually over 300 children with funds to buy winter coats and shoes. The President of the Intero Foundation Cathy Jackson believes that, “Hollister is such a small yet loving community and it is important to give to the event that means so much to the community.” Small Steps is excited to have the support from the Intero Foundation, along with providing a huge volunteer opportunity for the San Benito County residents.

For the first time, the Intero Foundation has granted HOPE Services Homestart Program which provides professional guidance and nutritional education to physically and mentally disadvantaged children and their families. As the Hollister Intero agents discussed the grants before submitting them for board review, agents discovered how much the program personally influenced our clients and friends.

The Real Meaning of What We Do

My entire career in Real Estate I've been involved in various volunteer activities, including the annual Make-A-Wish softball tournament at Twin

Creeks and hosted by Chicago Title, the local Realtors Seniors Volunteer

Program in Mountain View and Los Altos, as well as the Intero Foundation.

I've always been involved with children and enjoy interacting with them,

including my nephews, friend's kids as well as participating in the Little

Sister/Big Sister program while I was in college.

One of the reasons I joined Intero was the Intero

Foundation. I came from working for several large corporations and was

intrigued when I heard about Intero and their Foundation. I found it very

interesting that a smaller real estate brokerage (at the time), had the

foresight to create a Foundation and had a core set of values including

giving back to the community in which its serves. It's so simple and yet so telling

about the true intentions of the Intero Founders and the company

as a whole. I'm in my ninth year in real estate and always

contribute to the Intero Foundation every time a happy client closes

escrow. In addition, two years ago I joined the Intero Foundation task

force as an ambassador and am now the Chief Marketing Officer.

Collectively, we're doing amazing things for the children in need in our

local communities. I am proud to be a part of such an incredible group of

people.

Hollister’s Hot Wheels for Kids Helping Children Give Back

A few months ago Hollister’s Intero Real Estate Services raised over $1000 in the First Annual Hot Wheels for Kids Car and Motorcycle Show for the Intero Foundation, which gives the funds back to Bay Area children.  Following the steps of the Saratoga event, Hollister provided a day of fun for the whole family with classic and antique cars and motorcycles for display.  The family oriented community always finds ways to make a difference in children’s lives.

While people voted for the best vehicle at the first annual event, they enjoyed the beats from the local band Smith Alley, starring the talented singer Jesiah Baer.  For a small donation children were able to put on tattoos, play bean bag toss, and cast a line for a fishing game with a guarantee prize.  Children, adults, and Intero agents were smiling and dancing right in the Intero parking lot to create awareness and raise donations for the Intero Foundation, and I am sure they will be in attendance next year.

People do not move to Hollister just because of the affordability and short work commute to the Silicon Valley, but rather they are attracted to the supportive family community.  The Intero Foundation event not only provides a day of fun in Hollister, but teaches children to also give of themselves to help someone else in need.  As the Hollister Ambassador, I am continuing to give back to my community which supported me throughout my childhood.

Friday Cooking at the JW house was wonderful

We added meaning to our generous donation of $10,000.  Thank you all for coming and helping out. I was a bit overwhelmed to have so much help around the kitchen. ( I normally don't get that much help) it was great, Fun, rewarding and turned to be tasty. I guess our secret ingredient for the tasty food really worked (love, generosity and good intentions). Especially thanks to my 2 girls, to Dana and Amit; you were amazing, you stayed until everyone finished eating, helped to wash the dishes, and cleaned the kitchen. You did it all with smile and grace. I adore you girls!!

As dinner was going on, few guests came to speak with me to compliment us for the great food and thank us. While speaking, they shared their hardship of their loved ones being sick and hospitalized for many months at Kaiser.   Hearing all this, emphasized the essence of the JW house and the services they provide. During the conversations, some asked who we were, I told them about who we are and about our foundation and contribution to the JW house and to many other great charities. They were all so much impressed and thankful. One told me "you wouldn't think real estate office will do such a nice thing" I went on explaining about our Intero and why the foundation was created and that we are really involved in the community and try to give back as much as we can...Show me another Real Estate Company who does that!!!

For all the agents who like to help and be part of such spititually rewarding activities, there are more opportunities to help, all you need is to let me know you want to help.

“As many of us know, DreamPower Horsemanship has been a recipient of the Intero Foundation grants for the past few years due to their excellent work with troubled children.  DreamPower provides therapeutic riding services as part of the counseling process to help children, teens and families cope with learning disabilities, drug or alcohol dependence, anxiety and so many other issues.  The counseling staff are Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists as well as NARHA therapeutic riding instructors.  Pretty impressive. But did you know DreamPower also helped rescue 2 abandoned horses recently?  Last month two horses were found wandering along the road in Morgan Hill, malnourished, thirsty and clearly disoriented.   The mare and her 2 year old filly were rescued and turned over to Martha McNeil, executive director at DreamPower to care and nurture them until they can be adopted to a new home.  Martha named them Naomi and Ruth after biblical heroines that were homeless for a while and said they were very sweet and friendly.

Compassionate and caring people come from all walks in life and touch our lives in many ways.  From helping children and families in need to rescuing abandoned horses in town.”
